An institution is envisioned for posterity, and this vision leads to a way of thinking about its physical environment on a long term span. The management of an institution has a method to ensure the likelihood of decisions about the physical environment being taken in a considered manner, than take decisions that have only a short term relevance.

The approach to conceptualise and realise the institution's physical environment begins by appreciating the architecture of the buildings that shape the identity of the institution. The interior of these buildings have a unique spatial feeling and the furniture designs must make their contribution to enrich this character.
Next is understanding the designs and the activities that happen in the different spaces: what sort of classes happen in the classrooms, how does the scientist manage his laboratory research, who inhabits the resource centre for long hours, how does the cafeteria space encourage socialising, what sort of an auditorium is suitable for long lectures, so on and so forth This helps the designer design the furniture ergonomically.

The third appreciation is for the lifetime of the furniture: what materials are durable, how well will they look as they age, how can they be maintained easily – in short, an appreciation of a certain timelessness in the character and solidity of the furniture elements.

Synthesising this understanding to evolve into a concept, then detail it for manufacture and implement it on site – this is what we do; and our experience of 25 years is a vast body of organisational knowledge that every young designer at Dovetail can access. As for our capability to deliver, we have in-house capability in composite technologies - board, wood, sheet metal, mild steel, stainless steel, painting and polishing, and upholstery.
Thats dovetailing. A seamless fit of design, engineering, production as well as logistics. Integrating design happiness with serious manufacturing of school furniture.
